How To Refinish Hardwood Floors

When it comes to refinishing hardwoods, here's a few important things we do at Portland Wood Refinishing. We strongly encourage you to hire a hardwood professional instead of a DIY process that might make mistakes or damage the floor. Damage to your flooring can be much more costly than simply hiring the correct services the first time.

1. Know Your Floors

Our first step in the process is always to study the existing hardwood floors. Knowing the grain, finish, style and current layout of your home is crucial in creating a plan for refinishing or resurfacing the floors. Without a plan, you're setting yourself up for trouble. Then, we go around the floor hammering down any nails that have protruded over time and clean up with a vacuum and mop.

2. Use The Correct Tools

Obviously since we've been in the industry for years, we have all the necessary sanders and finishing equipment to handle this job. But you would need a walk-behind sander (aka drum-sander), solid wood sanding machine, hand sanders and sandpaper to start on a DIY project. You'll also need finishing cloths and a squeegee mop in some circumstances for the refinish.  Not to mention little things like dust masks, rags and pads. Just another reason to contact us!

3. Be Patient And Prep

Refinishing wood floors is as much an art as a science. We always start by removing baseboards throughout the refinishing area to protect them from damage. It's knowing when and how long to hold the sander on each different area (and each different floor finish). Mistakes here could be looking at a mistake costing you thousands. Be patient with the sander and remove all existing wax or finish coat before moving on. Don't forget to vacuum up all dust because that won't work well with the new stain and finish on the wood.

More About Us

The Difference Between Refinishing and Resurfacing

Hardwood Floor Refinishing

This method is considered more "heavy duty" for a floor makeover. It involves deeper sanding to fully remove scratches, scrapes, dents, etc. In heavily trafficked areas if your home, we often recommend this due to the amount of imperfections found there! If necessary you can reinforce some wood planks which have shifted so that your finish will be clean at end. After all these steps are completed (including proper leveling), the floors are cleaned up before receiving their new stain color and polyurethane sealing coat for protection.

Hardwood Floor Resurfacing

Resurfacing is a quick and easy way to get new life out of your floors. It doesn't have the same benefits as resurfaced hardwood, but works well for lighter trafficked areas with few scratches or scuffs- perfect if you're looking at applying color in these situations! The removal process includes sanding just one time before application will stain them; this makes it cost efficient due both its speediness (you don’t need deep grooves!) And because there isn't much detail involved on our end after we've finished up - it means less waste too

Cost To Refinish Hardwood Floors

The cost to refinish your hardwood floors in Portland can vary on several factors. These include the amount of scratches, floor age, if they've been refinished before and do need repairs. It's often best for us simply provide you with a free quote with an onsite inspection. This provides us clear details on what services need to be done with your specific floors. We find that most clients fall within $1-2.5k range (about $5 per square foot). Obviously we cannot guarantee this as an estimate but hopefully should give some idea when talking numbers.

FAQs

Here are common questions we get asked about flooring

  • Can you refinish wood floors yourself?

Many people love the DIY aspect and we certainly encourage it as a small business. Hardwood floors are something that some DIYers can handle and others might not want to. We discuss it in more detail on our blog post about whether you can DIY refinish your hardwood floors

  • Is water-based or oil-based poly better for refinishing?

This is extremely common for people to ask. As a professional flooring company, we certainly have our preferences on water vs oil based sealants. In fact, we wrote an entire article about it here - Water vs Oil Based Polyurethane For Refinishing so check it out.

  • How long should you stay off wood floors after refinishing them?

A great question for nearly all of our clients. The answer will depend on which type of polyurethan we used to finish your floors. If we're doing oil-based, it's common to need at least 24 hours before walking on the floors. However, water based agents can dry within 8 hours and be ready to walk on. Check out this post we made about How Long You Should Wait Before Walking On Refinished Wood Floors to learn more.

  • How can you best protect wood floors?

There are several awesome tips and tricks to protect your wood floors. We discuss them at length in our blog post about the Best Tips To Protect Your Wood Floors so check that out to learn more.
